About Us

In the heart of the Vancouver punk rock scene, Total Shock emerged in 2019 as a force to be reckoned with. Comprised of the dynamic trio Ryan Wagner, Tyler Mounteney, and Chris Johnson, alongside the rhythmic powerhouse Brad Vandermey, they set out on a mission that would become the backbone of their explosive journey.

Fuelled by a wild ambition, the quartet vowed to birth 50 songs in a single year—an audacious goal that sparked a frenzy of creativity. As fate would have it, 21 of those tracks found their way into the recording studio, and 16 of them made the cut for their debut self-titled album. Recorded at Rain City Recorders under the masterful guidance of Jesse Gander, the album dropped in 2020, just as the world found itself in the clutches of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Undeterred by lockdowns, Total Shock navigated the uncharted waters of the pandemic, releasing a slew of singles and self-recorded EPs that served as a sonic rebellion against the isolation. The band used this time wisely, gathering for writing sessions and rehearsals whenever the restrictions allowed, forging a stronger connection through their shared passion for punk.

With the lifting of pandemic restrictions, Total Shock stormed back onto the live music scene, tearing up iconic Vancouver venues like the Anza Club, Green Auto, and Bully’s Studios. Their performances were a cathartic release, a celebration of the resilience of the Vancouver music community and the power of punk to unite.

In the spring of 2023, the band faced a seismic shift as original drummer Brad Vandermey bid farewell to the rhythm throne. But, as punk resilience would have it, enter Michael “Mick” McDiarmid, a local scene stalwart, injecting new life and vigor into Total Shock. With new found energy the quartet, continued their journey with unwavering passion.

As a testament to their irreverent spirit and a return to the original inspiration for the band, Total Shock donned the alter ego “Vancid” for a Halloween cover set, paying homage to punk legends Rancid. Their metamorphosis was a hit, leaving the audience craving more of the band’s infectious energy.

As if that’s not enough, members of the band bring a rich tapestry of experience from previous projects like the WPP, the Parallels, the Ballantynes, the Tranzmitors, and Poor Baby, further solidifying Total Shock’s place in the illustrious history of Vancouver punk.

Total Shock: where every chord is a rebellion, every beat is a riot, and every show is an unapologetic celebration of Vancouver punk rock.
